Albert the Elephant

Somehow, while writing the previous post, I completely forgot about the most recent addition to the decorations in my condo (most recent meaning not works in progress). This would of course be Albert the Elephant, baby elephant to be more precise. He sits in the corner of my dining room, holding up a piece of round glass, but he apparently can’t hold it level. I’m gonna have to help him with that…

Godzilla vs King Kong

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking “Godzilla, that’s awesome….but why is it there?” I’ll tell you why, because it is awesome. Ok, it’s a bit more than that, but before I push the image too far down I’ll move to explaining beneath the image, so scroll down!

Godzilla

That’s right, down here, there you go. So, awesomeness aside, why do I have this silhouette of Godzilla posted? I’ll tell you why. Because I have an empty wall that needs filling, that’s why!

Since I first moved into my condo I found myself tasked with something relatively new to me, decorating. Back when I lived with my parents my decorating was pretty much limited to my immediate room, which 90% of the time consisted of some posters and piles of junk on my desk, bureau, and pretty much everywhere else. When I was younger I did get a set of G.I. Joe wall stickers that my younger brother and I split between our rooms, plus I’d earned some fake Indian stuff at summer camp. During college it was a similar deal, limited to my dorm room, and if anything, I decorated even less then. But now, now that I actually have a place of my own, with many many plain white walls, well, I feel the need to fill them with something. Not just anything, mind you, that would be even more boring than nothing. No, I need to fill them with unique, creative, manly things!

I think the first thing I decorated my walls with was a tin filled with three of my favorite things: Booze, Smokes, and Puppies – the Trifecta, the only thing missing was women, but that’s ok, 3 out of 4 of my favorite things ain’t bad (for those of you who don’t know me…booze and smokes aren’t actually in my list of favorite things…puppies and women however….). The Yeungling brewer tin has familial attachments, plus I just think puppies drinking booze and smoking is pretty funny. Check out a picture of this artistic delicacy here. In fact, the wall you can see in the background is ultimately the one Godzilla is all about, but I’ll get to that.

After the puppies adorned the area above my dining room I got it in my head to mount my guitar. The fact that I’m still only capable of strumming a few chords is beside the point, a guitar on the wall is a sign of manliness. And so, with the help of my dad, I designed and built this. Which allowed me to mount the guitar like this. Manly, I know.

Some might consider two pieces of art/decoration enough and call it a day, but not me, no, I needed more. The longest wall in my condo is in my living room, and that in turn means it was also (and technically still is) the emptiest. Clearly, I needed to fill this space. My brother, Zareiff, who’s gallery is linked to on the right, is an artist, and so I came to him with an idea I had to fill this space. I needed a painting, a relatively large painting (when I say large I don’t mean like ‘The Last Supper’ large, just 36″x48″ or so large), and painting that will be the pinnacle of awesomeness and manliness. I don’t recall how specific my original idea was, or which portions of it were his ideas, but what I do know is that I wanted something local, with the DC landscape. I also wanted it to be personal, so I would be a central character in the painting. And, of course, it had to be manly, so it would involve violence! Ultimately the idea culminated into a chaotic version of the DC landscape in the background, while in the foreground myself and Christopher Walken (both in giant form) would tower over the monuments while engaged in mortal combat.

I know, you’re speechless, aren’t you? Could anything possible be more awesome? No, it couldn’t, but something might come close. Sadly, the painting hasn’t developed beyond the conceptual stage, and the canvas purchasing stage, but it will get done.

Now you’re definitely thinking “That’s plenty of decoration,” but you’d be wrong. No, with the painting still unpainted, I only had one piece of decoration in the living room. That wouldn’t suffice, no, so I purchased one of my brother’s earlier paintings to hang above my TV. A painting of Cobra Commander, what could be more awesome than a painting of the most infamous fictional international terrorist ever to live (in a fictional world)? Well, the aforementioned painting, clearly, but other than that, nothing, I suspect. See what I mean by taking a gander here.

All of that, but there’s more! “How could that be?” You say, “You can’t possibly make such a place more awesome.” You’re wrong though, and I’ll tell you why. Seeing just how awesome the guitar mount turned out, and considering I have a very nice trombone (that I can actually play much better than the guitar) I decided to make a trombone wall mount. Again my dad helped out here, and he admittedly probably came up with more of the design on this than I did, plus he cut out the actual “handles”, though I did almost all of the backboard for it, and he dug up some nice felt to put in the handles to prevent scratches. It’s not finished yet, but once I’m home for the holidays I think it’ll get wrapped up.

And now to the last element on my list of decorations, or planned decorations – those manly things that make a home unique and personal…and the very subject of this post….Godzilla vs King Kong!

There’s a barren wall in my dining room that gets prominent viewing to anyone walking through the condo as well as plenty of light, but I couldn’t come up with a way to fill it. I’d kept thinking pictures, except, I have no pictures to put on the wall and had no desire to go on a photography kick, especially since it’d take me forever to take any worth putting on the wall. No, I needed something else…something…manly! And then I had an epiphany. I saw Godzilla…fighting King Kong…on my wall! Yes, pure genius, but instead of being a painting, or being painted on to the wall, I wanted it more subtle, but still something I could take with me if I moved. Something thin to be placed up against the wall, a silhouette cutout, but what material? Discussing the matter with my brother I believe we settled on vinyl of some sort, but I’m not positive. And now he’s begun to craft out the designs, once of which is included at the top of this post! He also sent me a King Kong, but he had a beer belly…that’s not gonna fly…

And there you have it, the explanation, the most awesome and manly condo ever – that’s what I’m going to have.

Before I forget, if you’re reading this post while it’s still at the top of the page, how awesome does the graphic look, what with the transparency and the way the tail curls under the menu on the right? Now I want to come up with a way to fix it in place…too bad my knowledge of CSS is crap…but I’ll figure it out, eventually, maybe…..

Busy busy…

I’ve been told I need more content, plus more women of questionable virtue, and tales from EvilCorp.

Sadly I’ve been horribly busy lately and just haven’t had time.

I have noticed, strangely, that the spammers seemed to disappear for several days, but then I got hit by 5 or so this morning. I guess we’ll see if they start up again.

I’d been working on Interdementia during my metro rides home, but lately I’ve just been too tired. Hopefully that’ll change.

As for women of questionable virtue, if you know any, send them my way ;)

Attack of the spammers

You know your blog has hit the bigtime when it starts getting spammed heavily.
Actually, it probably just means I’ve hit an inroads with whatever it is that populates the morons database. Luckily WordPress has settings that let you approve comments before they’re posted so I can stay on top of this crap.

Unfortunately, it appears that of the 31 comments I’ve gotten over the life of the site, 7 were legit, 24 were spam – but at least one of those legit comments was from a complete stranger, that’s a start, right?

Vote for Lando Calrissian

I wish someone had told me Lando was running before I went out to vote today. He even filmed an ad in the DC metro (at least it looks like it to me).
If you haven’t voted yet…then you’re probably not on the East Coast….but I’d strongly recommend you vote for Lando.

Menu’s continued…some more

So it turns out it was my attempts to make the menu semi-transparent that killed it in IE. I’ve since modified the CSS to get the same effect, and IE ignores the opacity setting there, so now the menu works (as far as I’ve seen up to this point) in both FF and IE….

If you can’t get a menu to work leave a comment…

Menu Problems Continued

So I thought I’d finally gotten the menu working correctly, it looked great in Firefox, it looked great in Opera, and it looked great in IE 7 too. Then I got in to work and tried it out on IE6 and…failure, the same stupid problem with the sub-level menu’s not folding out.

I’m sure it’s partially related to IE’s standards compliance issues, but at the same time the demo’s for the plugin I utilized work in IE6, so there might be a setting that just needs a tweaking….

If only IE would get banned from the internet…

Dropdown menu issues.

I’ve been messing around with the dropdown menu on the site. If you use Firefox (and possibly Opera and Safari) it should work, most of them time. IE, because it’s such a poorly designed browser, is a bit less functional….though I believe I had IE7 working more or less. IE6 is another story.

Oh yeah…and if you’re interested in having a similar dropdown menu on your website, I highly recommend this one, which can be downloaded from http://pixopoint.com/multi-level-navigation/

It’s coming along nicely from when I first started using it, partially because I started to read the support forums and saw what people were requesting, and made some requests of my own…and then realized that seeing as how I know php (the coding language wordpress and it’s plugin’s are primarily written in) I could make some of them myself. So I did, and then I passed along my work to the author, who’s been quite enthusiastic about my contributions. He’s slowly beginning to incorporate them, as he looks over them and starts to understand them. I’d say the most noticeable addition would be the little “>” that indicate sub-menu’s, but he hasn’t gotten around to incorporating that one just yet.

Recently he’s also made some javascript changes, and since he’s utilizing the wonderful jQuery library I’ve been able to further tweak/modify/condense those down too. The keyboard navigation (that I suspect…no one uses…but if they wanted to) has now been greatly enhanced.

Currently I’m trying to work on fixing up the fancy slideouts of the menu’s, unfortunately I’m getting some weird results (this is the cause of the menu issues). Hopefully I’ll resolve them soon.

And of course if you’ve read things this far…you now think I’m a dork… good for you.

I don’t write these often enough…

It’s apparently that time again – that time when I realize it’s been a month or more since I last posted to the blog. I realize I use this website for more then just a blog (though not necessarily much more), but since this is the face of it, I really should take the time to write up a brief post every now and then.

So let’s see. I guess the biggest thing, related to this site anyway, is that I’ve begun working on “Interdementia”. While the menu still says “Interdementianal” I think I’m going to change the name to “Interdementia”. I’d say it has a better flow, though “Interdemential” I think might better convey what the story is about. Ultimately, though, I think people will get enough of the idea from “Interdementia”. Currently work has only begun on one of the main story threads, and I plan to weave several of them together. What I haven’t yet decided is if I’ll ultimately present each thread seperately, or interweave them together. For now, though, I’ll concentrate on this thread, and provide it on a semi-regular basis, hopefully. It likely will not have been proofread, so expect typos and other things. I’ll eventually clean it up, and probably flesh it out more. I think some of the earlier bits are a big dialog heavy, and could use some additional descriptions, but we’ll see.

And now it’s bedtime…so I’ll post more tomorrow…in theory.

The Ice Cream Truck Man Cometh

I dunno if this is a normal thing in more urban areas, but since I’ve moved into my condo I’ve noticed that ice cream trucks steadily drive through the area during warm weather, harping their wares with musical accompaniment. I suppose there’s a logic too it – there are a lot of condos and apartments packed into the area; probably a large number with small children. A concentrated mass of potential customers.

Initially they always seemed to play one song, “Turkey In The Straw”, though I admit I always think of the lyrics to “Do Your Ears Hang Low?” since…I don’t know the lyrics to “Turkey In The Straw.” Anyway, the song was always annoying, but at least it was “normal” in that ice cream trucks are known to play that song.

More recently, however, there seems to have been an influx of drivers seeking variety in their music and have begun to play other tunes – tunes that show their unfamiliarity with American music.

Sure, at first it just seemed like they’d expanded the variety of American folk music they were playing, “The Entertainer”, “On Top of Old Smokey”, etc.

But then things started to get interesting.

One day I heard the truck playing “Greensleeves,” this initially struck me as odd more because I was originally introduced to the melody as part of “What Child Is This?” a distinctly religious Christmas song. Now, realizing all of this I pushed aside the absurdity of playing Christmas music to sell ice cream, and instead thought it a bit odd to be playing an old English folk song in the Maryland suburbs. This isn’t as odd as playing it in say Bahrain, but it is still strange. Upon researching the matter, though, I found that this song is pretty common for Ice Cream Trucks… in the UK. Maybe the owner got the truck cheap on import and just used the stock music?

But wait, things get stranger! Yes, indeed they do. As I’ve already mentioned, I initially thought of Christmas music when I heard “Greensleeves” but then corrected myself, however, “Silent Night” is most definitely Christmas music. So is “Oh Come All Ye Faithful”. “O Christmas Tree”, “Joy to the World”, “Jingle Bells”, “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer”, and had I taken the time to write them all down, the list would go on. The Ice Cream Trucks are now most certainly playing Christmas music. Religious and secular songs alike.

Oh sure, they still intersperse it with the American Folk tunes, and “Greensleeves”, but now they play Christmas music more then anything.

I can only think the motivation for it is that they think people will think of snow, and somehow associate snow with ice cream, and want to have ice cream. I don’t really see that works too well, but maybe. Another more likely possibility is that with the strong ethnically diverse community around DC, and the relatively low tier job that is driving an ice cream truck, these drivers might be unaware of what the songs they’re playing are about. Of course even this possibility has flaws, since someone clearly gave them that music to play. The real question is….why?

In a random internet search I saw that I’m not the only person who’s been noticing this:

Too bad I haven’t a clue where those were filmed.
